Veterans - the next big issue

Great post at Forbes from IAVA Founder and Executive Director Paul Rieckhoff entitled "Camo is the Next Pink".  His goal at IAVA - the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America - is to dramatically increase awareness of Veterans issues.  IAVA already is a great resource for GI Bill information and they are a leading advocate for Senate Bill 3447 - the Post 9/11 GI Bill change legislation currently stalled in Congress.

His point is that there is Pink everywhere to increase awareness of breast cancer and that issue has gone from being ignored to becoming one of the best known 'brands' in America.  Camo in support of Veterans should be just as important.

From his post:
"Ultimately, the daunting “Veterans Issue” can be broken down and owned. If scholarships are it, call the Pat Tillman Foundation. Green jobs training for vets? Reach out to Veterans Green Jobs. Support for families who lost a loved one? Reach out to the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors. This is more than charity. It’s an investment in a generation of dynamic American leaders-our country’s next “Greatest Generation.”"

We should all work towards making Camo the next Pink!  A worthy goal so that we can really, truly, thank and honor Veterans.

MBA Scholarships

We have been waiting a little while to announce this - but it is great new!  New England College of Business and Finance is now offering MBA's - and to get people excited about this new program, the charter class starting on January 10th, 2011 will receive a $5,000 tuition scholarship bringing the total cost of an online MBA down to $16,500 - this is absolutely amazing.

And NECB is regionally accredited and has been teaching finance to the banking industry for over 100 years - this is a great program.

I meet so many in the military that know that an MBA will help in them in the military and prepare them for life after the military.  And the NECB program is just a great way to essentially eliminate any out-of-pocket expenses using GI Bill or TA.

Your New Year's resolution should be to earn your MBA with NECB!

Over $1 Million in MBA Scholarships for Military

Yesterday was a significant milestone for the Florida International University Corporate MBA program - in just 5 months we have given away over $1 million in scholarships to military Service members, Veterans, their spouses and family members.

Now that is being truly military friendly!

Most of the Service members I work with are using Tuition Assistance or GI Bill - essentially bring the cost down to one quarter of the actual tuition cost.

If you are interested, please go to the website and see some of the quotes from our Veterans in the program:  http://cmba.fiu.edu/military.asp

MyCAA for a Master's?

The changes to the MyCAA program have been significant.  They have limited the military spouse education funding program to certain ranks and it can only be used for an Associates Degree or for a certificate program.  This seem to block out anyone trying to earn a master's degree - especially troublesome because many military spouses are teachers and a master's in teaching can really help your career if you have to move every 2-3 years.

But never underestimate the resourcefulness of military spouses.

One teacher, currently stationed in Japan, wants to earn her Master's in Curriculum and Instruction with ESL specialization leading to an ESL certificate.  Because it leads to a certificate, she can use her MyCAA dollars.  And because the program is from American College of Education, she only has to pay $6950 total for he program - subtract the $4,000 that MyCAA will pay and she can earn her M.Ed. for $2,950!!

So I called the MyCAA program just to make sure and they confirmed that because the course work leads to an additional certificate for the teacher, it does meet he requirements.  This is also true for our Education Leadership degree leading to principal certificate and our Educational Technology degree leading to a technology certificate!

This is great news for any military spouse who is teaching.  It can really take your teaching career to the next level.

GI Bill Fixes Cost Too Much?

Changes to the GI Bill might get stalled in the new Congress due to costs.  The Congressional Budget Office came out with estimates for S 3447 of $236 million in the first year and $2.3 billion over the first decade.

My gut reaction is - OK - doesn't that really pale in comparison to laying your life on the line for your country?

However, we supposedly have "Pay as you Go" now in Congress.  If they create a new entitlement for $2.3 billion, they have to find $2.3 billion in cuts or new taxes somewhere else.  With the Tea Party demanding deficit reduction and all citizens demanding accountability, it will be very difficult to get this passed.

They did ignore Pay as you Go for the Post 9/11 GI Bill - so it can be done.  But that was then, this is now.

Best thing to do is write your Congressman and Senators to urge them to pass S3447 and the House Version HR 5933!!  Post 9/11 GI Bill was a great start and these new bills will go a long way towards helping all Veterans achieve their education goals.

Military Veteran MBA's

For Veteran's day we wanted to get some thoughts from our Military Veteran MBA's in the Florida International University program. Freddie Sanquiche, who is pictured above took the program because he went from being an Apache Crewchief in the Air Force to a civilian contractor in Iraq and needed an online program to be able to advance his career.  He told me that "The Veterans scholarship made it affordable for me to pursue my master's degree."

Andy Gammel served six years in Marine Corps Special Operations and now works in the oil business.  He told me;  "I chose FIU because of the high academic standing, the highest accreditation level for MBA's, good program value and a fully online program."

All Military Veterans, Active Duty and their immediate families qualify for the $20,000 military scholarship.  You only need a military ID to take advantage of an amazing program at an affordable price.

For Veterans Day: Troops become Teachers

Military Veterans in the classroom is not a new story.  But American College of Education is helping Veterans advance into leadership positions and enhance their teaching practice by earning their master's degrees.

We have just posted their great stories on our website!  Denise Kemp is a Second grade teacher in North Caroline and is still in the Air Force reserves.  The quote that really hits home: “I decided to go into teaching because my favorite part of being a supervisor in the military was training airmen how to do their job".

David Starr is teaching Fifth Grade in Illinois.  He is in the National Guard and spent a year training troops for Afghanistan and Iraq.  He loves the fact that in his master's degree program he has "been expose to new ideas that I have implemented in the classroom.  I have been more focused on research-based theories and practices."

Mark Osenko teaches Eighth Grade History in Connecticut.  He served in the Marine Corps in the Infantry (I imagine his history class is learning about the Marine Corps' 235th birthday today!).  He went into teaching to "help students reach their full potential".

All of our students are using the GI Bill to earn their Master's in Education.  This is a tremendous opportunity.  The prevailing theme in speaking with these Veterans/teachers who are now students is that they love the opportunity to serve this country a second time in our classrooms.

Thank you and we honor you on this Veterans Day!

Get the Facts on MyCAA

I still get quite a few questions from military spouses on the MyCAA program.  It is a DoD funded scholarship for military spouses that provide $4,000 in education funding for certificate or associate degree programs.

From the MyCAA site - click here the resources you need to answer the following questions.:
  • Who is eligible to participate in the MyCAA Program
  • What MyCAA funding does and does not pay for
  • How to establish a MyCAA Account
  • How to provide feedback to MyCAA
  • How to get additional information and assistance.

Click here to review new MyCAA Program Guidelines. Updated FAQs for Spouses and FAQs for Schools provide additional information.  If a video is more to your liking, there is a MyCAA Video.
Don't mess around on this.  The money seems to come and go with the federal budget.  And with budget cuts looming, you don't want to have missed out on a great opportunity.
Remember when you are enrolling in MyCAA:  New England College of Business has an Associate Degree in Business for Military Spouses for a total tuition cost of $4,000:  http://www.necb.edu/mycaa
